In comparing ourselves to other professionals, we are in the unique position of offering mental health services in English and Spanish due to our fluency in these languages. In fact, several of Gerena & Associates clinicians immigrated to the United States and consistently reference their diverse cultural backgrounds when making case formulations, identifying treatment goals, providing therapeutic services, and rendering diagnostic findings. Considering the multicultural composition of the tri-county area, this skill is essential, as traditional interviewing techniques, assessment measures, and therapeutic styles must be modified in order to effectively serve the individual and/or his/her family. That is, to conduct psychological services in an ethically sound manner, Gerena & Associates believes it is important to have a distinct perspective about the impact of culture on mental health functioning, as well as the knowledge base to potentially avoid misdiagnoses and unrealistic treatment recommendations. We therefore routinely access innovative strategies that improve practice principles and standards for diverse/immigrant populations within the context of judicial and mental health systems, and we consistently use our familiarity with international customs as a base from which to initiate and establish professional relationships with those from other countries in a manner that communicates respect for their social mores. |
